This lecture is going to present data referring to foreign language attrition, a still relatively understudied phenomenon which refers to the gradual decline or loss of language ability, often occurring when a language is no longer regularly used. Research in this area investigates how and why people lose proficiency in their first, second, or foreign languages over time.

It will also present the ERSC funded project Negotiating Multilingualism in Situations of Conflict, which is dedicated to exploring the intersection of multilingualism and conflict, particularly focusing on how language dynamics influence and are influenced by conflict situations by examining two bilingual contexts: Ukranian-Russian and Catalan-Spanish.

Teodora Mehotcheva’s work has primarily focused on foreign language attrition, specifically how languages learned in formal education settings can weaken or be lost over time. Her doctoral thesis, the first Double PhD recognized in the Netherlands, used a multivariate approach, which combined both psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic data to study the phenomenon, challenging the ‘use it or lose it’ dichotomy prevailing in the field until then.

Currently, she oversees the psycholinguistic component in the Multilingualism in Situations of Conflict Project.
