Семинар „Антропологични четения“ има удоволствието да посрещне д-р Елана Ресник от департамента по антропология в Калифорнийския университет — Санта Барбара.
В своята лекция д-р Ресник ще представи ключови резултати и аргументи от своята нова книга „Refusing Sustainability: Race and Environmentalism in a Changing Europe“ (2025, Stanford University Press),
която стъпва върху дългогодишно теренно изследване върху политиките на устойчивост и социалните неравенства в София.

Sustainability has become a touchstone for development worldwide, promising an antidote to environmental degradation and capitalism’s excess: waste. Refusing Sustainability offers a different account of both
sustainability and waste by uncovering the intersections of international environmental reforms and racialized labor. In Bulgaria, Romani women comprise the bulk of the country’s waste workers, while anti-Roma sentiment casts them as socially disposable. Yet without their labor, Bulgaria cannot meet the environmental sustainability targets required by the European Union. Drawing on twenty years of fieldwork—including
eleven months working alongside street sweepers and years embedded in waste organizations, political campaigns, Roma NGOs, and activist groups—this talk approaches Romani life-worlds as sites of creative
production. In doing so, it illuminates broader dynamics of postsocialist racial capitalism, environmental progressivism, democratic failures, mutual aid, and the generative power of women’s friendships.

Елана Ресник е доцент по антропология в Университета на Калифорния, Санта Барбара, където ръководи изследователската група „Инфраструктурни неравенства“. Нейните изследвания разглеждат отпадъците, расиализацията и труда през мултимодални методология. Публикувала е статии в списания като „American Anthropologist“, „Public Culture“, „American Ethnologist“ и „Cultural Anthropology“.
Книгата ѝ „Refusing Sustainability: Race and Environmentalism in a Changing Europe“ е издадена от Stanford University Press през 2025 г.
