Synaptic plasticity is the manner in which synapses, the communication points between neurons, change their activity pattern in response to stimuli. It is a complex process, involving many proteins and sub-processes. This is well understood to play a crucial role in synaptic behavior, which positions this biological mechanism as central for various forms of learning and memory, as well as for the very way in which neurons relay information between each other.

In this talk I will present my work on two synaptic proteins, tomosyn and amisyn. These proteins are preferentially expressed in the hippocampus, a brain region associated with spatial learning and memory, as well as various emotional and psychological components. My work used knock out (KO) and knock-down (KD) methods in mice, in order to lower the expression levels of these synaptic proteins in a specific region of the hippocampus. Next, various behavioral tests were performed to evaluate hippocampal functions linked to spatial memory, anxiety and depression, and autistic-like behavior.

In the beginning of the talk I will outline the core methodologies and principles of behavioral neuroscience used to study these topics, and then we will continue to a discussion of the behavioral tests, their results, and the interpretation of these findings in the context of information-flow within the hippocampal circuitry.
